Profile Photo of J.D. Grubb

I love to help authors achieve their vision, especially book projects (non-fiction or fiction). I guarantee the highest level of professionalism in communication, organization, and timeliness. I look forward to chatting about your project.

Begin the conversation by emailing me at jdgrubb.author [at] gmail.com.

Published projects and client feedback are listed below. I am also on UpWork.

Book Editing:

DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING: I will read through the whole manuscript, making line notes where appropriate (e.g. identifying areas that would benefit from being expanded, sharpened, or trimmed) and also provide a summative review. It will be about a “high” view of the narrative, also addressing whether the structure makes sense or is as effective as possible.

COST: $0.0125 per Word (1st Review) / $0.0075 per Word (Optional 2nd Review)

COPY EDITING: I will work through the whole manuscript, making line notes regarding sentence structure, word choice, grammar, etc. along with general proofreading (e.g. punctuation, spelling).

COST: $0.0175 per Word (1st Review) / $0.0125 per Word (Optional 2nd Review) / $0.0075 per Word (Optional 3rd Review)

Book Outlining:

I will meet with you via a video call to hear your ideas or story, and from that create a working chapter outline. The drafted outline will be emailed to and owned by you, the author, and is intended to be used and updated as a guide for the manuscript writing process.

COST: $200 (1st Call + Draft) / $100 (Optional 2nd Call + Draft)

Book Coaching:

I will guide you in where to begin and the many tasks to consider – from writing the book to editing, formatting, and cover design – as well as copyright, acquiring an ISBN, deciding which aggregates/ platforms to publish on (e.g. Amazon, Apple, Spotify, libraries, etc.), building a website, newsletter, and social media presence, and also marketing your book, including ads, and budgeting.

I can also guide you in how to build a website from scratch on a budget using WordPress.

COST: $30 per 1-Hour Virtual Call

Published Projects:

I provided developmental, content and line editing to the book, which also included discussions about outline organization, writing summative blurbs, and a basic formatting of the finished manuscript for eBook and print.

Feedback:  “Thanks for making my dream of writing a book a reality. I would not have been able to complete this book at this level without your incredible support as an editor. Your suggestions and feedback enabled me to create the most effective version of this book that I could. . . . It has truly been an honor working with you. The professionalism and dedication that you have brought to the table are much appreciated.”

I provided developmental editing (clarifying meaning, eliminating jargon, polishing language) as well as copy editing for smoothness and clarity while maintaining the author’s voice, which included correcting grammar, word usage, spelling, and punctuation.

Feedback: “As a relatively new writer, I did not know what working with an editor would look like. I was taken back when I got Josh’s first round of edits! The thoroughness and thoughtfulness Josh displayed is easily the single greatest contribution to the book’s final professional quality. Josh was always on time with edit returns, always thorough, and his guidance allowed my message to be refined into something that I’m very proud of. I definitely recommend Josh as an editor for your next project.”

I provided organizational and editorial feedback (developmental, copy, proofreading).

Feedback: “Joshua provided high-value feedback and editing of my writing. I appreciated his insights on both structure and style, and his specific content knowledge of my topic (health and fitness, running) was an asset. What started as a collection of articles and notes is now a finished book! I enjoyed working with Joshua and will likely have additional jobs for him in the future.”

I provided an extensive editorial review (developmental editing, copy editing, proofreading) of the manuscript’s first draft alone. What suggestions were ultimately applied by the author, I am not sure.

Feedback: “Joshua delivered everything as promised, great attention to detail, got himself immersed in the work and really went above and beyond. There was a genuine interest to produce the best possible outcome at all stages of the development, from developing the narrative, characters, structure and flow, to additional input on go to market strategy and navigating the world of publishing. It seems he also really enjoys working with authors, educating and going on the journey with them. More than just an editor, have no hesitation in recommending him to anyone.”
